Addressing the newly-minted 4th years, this comprehensive guide is to help you make an informed decision choosing your optional subjects in the upcoming semester.
There are 3 subjects for the running, namely –
- Laws Relating to Information Technology and Right to Information
- Banking Law
- Health Law
LAW RELATING TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND RIGHT TO INFORMATION
This is an interesting subject which has gained more significance in today’s virtual world. Since the pandemic due to our increased dependence on the cyber space the Information technology laws have to be interpreted so as to strike a balance between the rights of the user and their safety and privacy.
This subject gives you an insight into the basic concepts of e-governance, digital signatures and their legality etc.
The second unit also deals with Right to Information it’s jurisprudential essence and it’s latest development vis a vis the Supreme court judgements.
Overall this is a very informative subject which will definitely come in handy to all legal professionals in the near future.

BANKING LAW
‘Banking Law’ as an option in the seventh semester basically deals with –
- what a bank is i.e. its development , its types and various relationships and obligations it has towards its customers and
- Negotiable instruments briefly.
In terms of difficulty, it is not very difficult if you study just a little bit regularly with the class. A basic understanding of the contract law is sufficient to understand the subject. Though the subject is not as scoring as the other two options.
The reason why I chose banking law specifically was because I was planning to sit for the placements and I believed that banking as a subject would help with the companies that generally come to the college
The added advantage to this option is that the banking law book by R. N. Chaudhary is more than enough to cover the syllabus.
So depending on your aim and field where your interest lies, you can pick this subject. Remember that if you do pick “Banking Law” though, it’ll be a little difficult to score with last minute study rattafication sessions.

HEALTH LAW
Health law is a subject which I personally found to be quite interesting and informative at the same time. With regard to its syllabus, it has been designed in such a manner which will definitely give you a broad understanding of the subject with topics such as medical termination of pregnancy act, mental health act, transplantation of human organs act, etc.
This is a subject which I would recommend taking to those who are thinking of pursuing litigation as well as judiciary in the future as it will broaden your understanding of law not only in respect of its theoretical aspect but even the practical bit too.
At the end of the day, it is up to you whether or not to choose it as your optional but I would highly recommend this subject over the other two choices that you have as, comparatively, it will turn out better for you during your semester exam.
