Shreya Vajpei, Class of 2017, has recently been listed under 30 Women Legal Innovators in Asia to follow in 2022 by Asia Law Portal. Keeping in mind the importance of legal innovation growing rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region, Asia Law Portal released this list. This is the second time she has been listed by Asia Law Portal, the previous one being in 30 People to Watch in the Business of Law in Asia. She also expressed her thoughts and ideas in a detailed interview with Asia Law Portal, which is available on their website.
Initially, she began her career as a lawyer and then expanded her horizon to work as a legal innovation and legal technology writer and advisor, and practice development specialist. She is the prime mover behind Prolawgue, a legal tech website. She is currently working full time at one of the most reputed law firms in India – Khaitan and Co.
When asked about how she would describe this achievement, she said that she is glad that places are finally recognizing that the law is changing and that new mechanisms are the need of the hour. She mentions how there is a massive requirement for lawyers in business to keep up. For this purpose one should keep changing, adapting and be agile while practicing law and that is exactly where innovation comes in.
Further, when we asked her if she had any advice for budding lawyers and fresh graduates, she provided her much needed insightful thoughts. The first thing she mentioned was that one would not be blind sided and rather should be open to newer disciplines, newer perspectives; learn more things part from law, like basics of finance, data analytics, design thinking, MS operations, etc.
Secondly, she spoke about how one should have an on hand project and should try to solve an actual problem as no amount of reading, books, courses will help you in working on and solving actual on ground issues. Not matter how simple the issue maybe. She ended by saying that the point is to not always be successful but to keep trying and putting yourself into newer projects and solving problems. During this process you will teach yourself so much more than any course, college, book etc will ever be able to.
The Blue Pencil offers heartiest congratulations to her and wishes her all the very best for her future endeavors!
