The National Rounds of the Eighth Leiden Sarin International Air Law Moot Court were held at the Army Institute of Law. The same was inaugurated by Mr. Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court along with Mr. Justice SS Sodhi, President of the Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation and Mr. Manmohan Lal Sarin, senior advocate and Secretary General of the Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation. Justice Mittal has been known for having practiced various kinds of law such as the civil law, company law, taxation law etc. and was elevated to the bench of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana in 2004. During his address, Justice Mittal spoke about the importance of mooting and the three important rewards that one gains from them – The art of argumentation, acceptance of losses and understanding verdicts and lastly and most importantly a greater inculcation of a plethora of laws and judgement.
Justice Sodhi is a Barrister at Law from London’s Lincoln Inn with a distinguished track record as a lawyer. After serving as a judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court from where he retired. Justice Sodhi in his address thanked the college for the utmost organisation and efficiency, he too emphasised on the importance of mooting in the life of a budding lawyer and the utmost need for leadership and guidance from his seniors during the same.
Mr. Sarin, who completed his LLB from Panjab University and LLM from Northwestern University, USA is a distinguished debater and has won over a hundred prizes in moot court and declamation contests. He spoke about the introduction of Air Law related courses in the college as well as provision of financial aid to the college from the foundation in order to facilitate the propagation of these courses.
Sixteen teams from the top law schools participated in the international level moot court competition and worked their hardest in order to represent India in the international rounds which are to be held at Malta.
The winners of the AIL Sarin Air Law Moot Court Competition were National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. The runners up were Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow.
