The Army Institute of Law, Mohali hosted the eight edition of its renowned National Moot Court Competition- “Checkmate 2018” from 19th to 21st January 2018. The Moot Court Society of AIL along with students from the Institute ensured the smooth organisation of the event. 39 teams from various law schools came from across the country to participate in this grand event.
The preliminary rounds and quarter finals were held on the 20th of January. The semi final and final round were held on 21st January in the Multi Purpose Hall. In the finals, School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore and ILS,Pune competed to win the prestigious trophy. They were judged by a bench consisting of eminent people of the legal fraternity.
The Valedictory Function began right after the final round with Hon’ble Mr Justice Vazifdar; Chief Justice Punjab and Haryana High Court as the Chief Guest and Hon’ble Justice Gurvinder Singh Gill; Judge Punjab and Haryana High Court, Professor Jaswal, Vice Chancellor RGNLU, Maj General Navneet Kumar SM, Hon’ble Justice Rajan Gupta; Judge Punjab and Haryana High Court as guests of honour.
The winning teams were felicitated with awards and cash prizes. The award for second best advocate was bagged by Mannat Arora- UILS Panjab University Regional Center, Ludhiana and she was given a cash prize of Rs 10000. Shreya Singh – Gujrat National Law University, Gandhinagar was adjudged as the best advocate and was given a cash prize of Rs 15000. The award for second best memorial holding a cash prize of Rs 15000 was awarded to Amity Law School, Delhi and the best memorial award carrying a cash prize of Rs 25000 went to Dr Ambedkar Govt Law College, Chennai.
Finally the time to declare the winner of Checkmate 2018 arrived and the trophy along with a cash prize of 50000 rupees was awarded to the winner- School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore. ILS,Pune were the runners up and received a cash prize of Rs 35000.
The 3 day long event ended with a vote of thanks by the esteemed Principal of the Institute, Dr Tejinder Kaur.
Checkmate 2018 was a huge success and we can’t wait to witness the grandeur of Checkmate next year.
