Gaurav Redhal is from the Batch of 2020. In this interview, he talks about why he chose Georgetown University for doing his LLM programme and how he got selected for the same.
The Blue Pencil:Why did you make a decision to study abroad?
Gaurav: I believe pursuing LLM abroad would equip me to think multi-dimensionally on various issues afflicting nations and continents, giving me expertise to formulate, modify and bring positive changes to existing international laws. Moreover, it shall equip me with fundamental values such as, professional competence and efficiency, which are crucial for working in an International Organization. It will open a gateway of pragmatic learning opportunities at international organizations as well as Government Agencies which will be beneficial for my career prospects. Moreover, it will provide me an opportunity to be a part of world renowned centres and institutes, enriching me with applicable skills, and encouraging me to seek innovative and unique solutions. Further, I am intrigued by the fact that, I will get to study in an environment full of individuals so varied with their backgrounds and opinions which will help me broaden my perspective and contribute to my holistic development.
TBP: How did you come across this particular College?
Gaurav: As far as Georgetown University is concerned, I did my research as per my program requirements and from various sources and reports I referred, I found Georgetown’s LLM Program most intriguing and suitable for my career needs.
I came to know about Fltecher School of Law and Diplomacy from one of my fellow classmates and I learned more about it from alumna of our college Kudrat Dutta Chaudhary, who happens to be an alumna of Fletcher School also.
TBP:What was the admission process like and what aspects should one focus on while applying for an institute like this?
Gaurav: The admission process for LLM applications in United States is quite smooth and simplified, as one has to apply through LSAC, which is a common portal for applications for most of the Law Schools. The process gets more streamlined, as you just have to submit the Transcripts and Letter of Recommendations to LSAC and not to the university directly, so it basically relieves you from all the hassle and stress.
While applying one must be very careful about the program, as it must be the program which caters to your career and academic aspirations. Also, while writing Statement of Purpose, one should focus on the skills and experience learned from all the internships. Along with this, make it sound more interesting and diversified, like concentrate on community work, include extra-curricular achievements et al.
As far as Letter of Recommendations are concerned, it majorly depends upon the professor but you may request the professor to acknowledge research papers you wrote or projects undertaken under the professor’s guidance. I feel one must have at least one professional Letter of Recommendation; it will surely help your candidature.
Also, the most important thing, be original and creative with the content of your application essays.
Be well versed with the application procedure beforehand, so that you don’t face any last moment surprises.
TBP: What subjects have you taken up and why did you choose the same?
Gaurav: I have opted for International Legal Studies as the specialization in the LLM program and the same was majorly influenced by the fact that every institution today has inevitably become multinational, bringing countries closer and interdependent on each other. Furthermore, in a time like this, when nations are competing to achieve global presence by making investments in the development and capacity building of other nations, it becomes quite significant to ensure a peaceful environment which can be achieved by regulation and enforcement of International Laws. Moreover, foreign policy decisions play an important role in narrating a country’s aspirations. Since, countries are coming together in the modern world, various inter-governmental organization are being formed, thus rendering it crucial to study and analyse the different aspects of international law in shaping a country’s policies.
TBP: What are your plans after you finish graduation?
Gaurav: I feel LLM in international legal studies would help me build a career in the field of international law. As of now, I am particularly looking towards working in an international organization. I feel it’s pertinent to realize the role of international organizations, as they encourage the interaction between States at the global level and compels the Member States to work as per the Constitution of such organization, thus influencing the formulation of foreign policy in a particular direction. But even before working in an International Organization, one needs to gain experience and expertise relevant to work in international law domain. So, after graduation I will be working towards enhancing my knowledge of all relevant rules and regulations, policies, procedures and operations of the international organizations, as well as of the applicable jurisprudence, along with international administrative law as practiced in international organizations, such as the United Nations
TBP:Any message for the Ailians?
Gaurav: For the fellow Ailians who wish to apply to for LLM, I would like to say that one must be very certain about his/her future plans and on the basis of your prospects choose the LLM program which best suits your interest instead of choosing the university as per the rankings. The program must cater to your needs and aspirations. Further, one must focus on developing necessary skill set and inquisitiveness which is required for the particular career. Moreover, direct your internships and fellowships into a particular direction, so that you can have relevant experience and knowledge at the time of applying for LLM.
