“Bang bang, I shot you down
Bang bang, you hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound…”
The night of October 1, 2017 started off with a bang at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, U.S.A. Followed by another, then another, and then more. The bangs were accompanied by thuds. Silent screams, piercing cries. Petrified people, thrashing limbs. The vibrance of the red gradually seeping into the ground, at odds with the dying spark of life in the eyes of many. The city was painted red. But the memory of that day is still black and bitter. 58 innocents were killed. All just victims of mindless killing.
It isn’t the first time something like this has happened. In recent years, such incidents have become pretty common. Shootings at schools and night clubs in the U.S. .At concerts in England. At a woman in India, for refusing to indulge an entitled brats demand to get him a glass of liquor. At a brave, young girl in Pakistan for voicing her opinions about women’s education. It makes no sense that a madman, a lunatic can just snuff out so many lives in a matter of a few minutes. It makes even less sense that the U.S has actually allowed possession of guns by mentally ill people.
Everyday, humanity is witnessing the death of reason. Who needs a date on the Mayan calendar to tell them about the Apocalypse. We aren’t waiting for it any longer. We’re witnessing it. It is here. It is now. And this will be the end of us all unless we actually start living up to the name we so proudly bestowed on ourselves- Homo sapiens sapiens. Where is the wisdom in our actions? Where is the intelligence that sets us apart and makes us superior to all the other species? What are we even bragging about? We just seem to be losing our humanity with the passage of time. For all our evolution, we’re nothing but blood-thirsty, trigger-happy beasts. Cheers to us!
